How to find bank fees to cancel in one afternoon

Pull two months of statements, mark the fees you do not recognize, and write one question per line. This is a shopping pass, not advice about which bank to use.

Pull two months on one page

Download or print the last two months of checking and savings statements. Write four lines at the top: bank name, account type, the date range, and the total of every fee line you can already see. A monthly maintenance fee, an ATM fee, and a paper-statement fee are the usual pile.

This is a shopping afternoon. It is not advice about which bank to keep, what account type to open, or how to invest the money you do not spend. If a fee would bounce a bill this week, call the bank and say that before you finish the list.

Mark three kinds of fee

Go line by line through both months. Sort every fee into one of three marks.

  1. Known and wanted: a fee you already accept (a safe-deposit box, a wire you requested).
  2. Known and unwanted: a monthly maintenance fee, an ATM fee outside the network, overdraft, or paper statements you do not need.
  3. Unknown: a code or name you cannot match to anything you asked for. Copy the date, the description, and the amount.
  4. Add the unwanted and unknown amounts for both months. That sum is the afternoon’s number.

One question per unwanted or unknown line

Call or message the number on the statement. Name the date, the description, and the amount. Ask what it is and how to stop it. Write the name of the person and the time.

If the fee is a monthly maintenance charge, ask what balance or activity waives it, and whether they will reverse the last one. Do not open a new product on the same call just to end the fee.

What this afternoon is not

Do not close the account on the first call if you still have direct deposits or autopay tied to it. Do not treat a one-time courtesy refund as proof the fee will not return. And do not switch banks until you have the list of fees in writing and a date they stop.

Add the bank name and the monthly fee total you are stopping to the same page as your Sunday money check. When the next statement arrives, you already know which lines should be missing.
