How to question a medical bill in one afternoon

Match the bill to the visit, ask for an itemized list, and write down what each line is. This is a shopping pass, not medical or insurance advice.

Put the papers in one pile

How to question a medical bill starts with three documents on the table: the bill, the explanation of benefits if you have insurance, and anything the office handed you on the visit day. Write four lines: the date of the visit, the provider name, the total, and the amount they say you owe.

This is a shopping afternoon. It is not advice about what coverage you should have, what to pay, or whether a charge is valid in your case. If the amount would change care you need this week, call the office and say that before you spend the afternoon on the paper.

Get the itemized list

A one-line total is not enough to check. Call the billing number on the statement, or use the patient portal, and ask for an itemized bill: each code or description, the date, and the price of that line. Write the name of the person you spoke with and the time.

  1. Ask: “Please send an itemized bill for the visit on [date], with each line and the amount.”
  2. Ask whether the visit is still being billed to insurance, or whether this is the patient balance after that.
  3. Ask how to send a written question about a line, and where the reply will go.
  4. Do not pay the statement during the call just to end it. If a line is due on a date, write that date on the same page as the four lines.

Match each line to the visit

When the itemized list arrives, sit with the visit date and mark three buckets: matches what happened, you do not recognize, and duplicate of another line. A facility fee, a lab you do not remember, or the same code twice is the usual pile to ask about.

Send one short note, not a speech. Name the visit date, the line, and the question: “I do not recognize this lab from that visit. Please confirm or remove it.” Keep a copy.

What this afternoon is not

Do not ignore a bill until a collector writes. Do not promise a payment plan on the first call if you have not seen the itemized list. And do not treat a lower “pay now” offer as proof the original number was right — it is a different price for the same paper.

Write the old total, the questions you sent, and the date on the same note as your Sunday money check. When a new statement arrives, you have the number you already asked about.
