How to read a paycheck stub in one afternoon
Match gross pay, the deductions you recognize, and the net that hit the bank. This is a paper check, not advice about what to withhold.

Put the stub next to the deposit
Open the pay stub from this period and the bank line for the same deposit. Write four numbers on one page: pay date, gross pay, net on the stub, and the amount that landed in the account. If the last two do not match, that is the afternoon.
This is a shopping pass over a piece of paper. It is not tax advice, not a withholding change, and not a reason to pick a retirement contribution. If a missing deposit would bounce a bill this week, call payroll before you finish the notes.
Mark three kinds of lines
Ignore the year-to-date column until the current period makes sense. On the current column, sort every deduction into one of three marks.
- Known: tax withholding, and a benefit you signed up for (health, retirement, union). Write the name you use for it, not the code.
- Unknown: a code you cannot match to a form you signed. Copy the code, the amount, and the pay date.
- Not a deduction: reimbursements, hours, or a rate. Those stay off the deduction list.
- Add the known and unknown amounts. Gross minus that sum should land on the net. If it does not, circle the gap.
One question per unknown line
Send payroll or the portal one short note. Name the pay date, the code, and the amount. Ask what it is and which form authorized it. Do not ask them to “explain my taxes.”
If net on the stub matches the bank and every line is known, you are done. Write the net on the same page as the Sunday money check so next month’s deposit has a number to beat.
What this afternoon is not
Do not change a W-4, a 401(k) percent, or direct deposit from a blog. Do not treat a bigger gross as money you can spend — the spendable number is the deposit. And do not compare your stub to a coworker’s. The codes are not the same job.
Keep the stub, the four numbers, and any question you sent. When the next one arrives, you already know which line was new.
