The free plans of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all write a decent paragraph. The hour you lose is the one you spend asking the same thing three times and blending the answers. Give each model one job for a week. If it loses that job, swap it. Do not add a fourth.
Which free plan for which job
Use this as a starting assignment, then keep the one that needed the fewest retries.
- Everyday drafts — ChatGPT’s free plan. Emails, outlines, and “cut this in half.” It is the default when you are staring at a blank box.
- Long documents you already have — Claude’s free plan. Paste a policy, a thread, or notes and ask for decisions only. It tends to stay closer to the text you gave it.
- A fact that needs a link — Gemini’s free plan, or a sourced search if Gemini will not show the page. Do not repeat a number until you open the source.
- Your own PDF pile — skip the chat box and use the free notebook in “How to summarize a long PDF for free.” A general chat window is the wrong place for a 40-page file.
A seven-day test
Monday through Wednesday, send real work to the assignment above. Write down each retry. On Thursday, move any job that took more than two tries to a different model. Friday, delete the tab you did not open.
Free limits move. If a plan starts blocking the one job you kept it for, that is the cue to switch — not to pay for all three.
