When to skip AI and do the task yourself
Five kinds of work where a model is slower or riskier than just doing it: short replies, private facts, original judgment, live numbers, and anything you cannot check.

Fast for you is not a prompt
If you can answer in two sentences you already know, typing a prompt costs more than typing the answer. Status replies to people who have the context, a yes or no, a calendar time — do those yourself. Save the model for the blank page and the long cut.
Do not paste what you cannot get back
Passwords, full account numbers, medical details, someone else’s private mail, unpublished financials. A free chat box is not a vault. Summarize the situation without the identifiers, or do not use the tool. If the draft is useless without the secret, the draft is not the right job.
Judgment, live numbers, and unchecked facts
Skip the model when the work is the decision: who to hire, whether the tone will land with a specific person, what you are willing to promise. It can list options. It should not pick for you.
Skip it for a number that has to be current — a price, a deadline, a policy — unless you open the source yourself. And skip it entirely when you will not have time to check the output. An unchecked paragraph in your voice is worse than a late reply.
